winners adjust

once in a while i fall out of the blogging world. for now, i'm back.

i'm teaching elementary music, kindergarten through eighth grade, in a charter school on the west side of the city. my kids are almost entirely latino. the school has maybe twenty black students, and i only need one hand to count the white kids. color aside, the kids are great. even though it's been a lot of work, i'm finally understanding what it feels like to love my job.

will and i live together in a 21st floor apartment overlooking the lake and the marina. we have a huge tv that will loves and nice black shelves and pictures that i love. it was an adjustment, at first. i'd never lived with a boyfriend before. it wasn't perfect right away, but as my friend (and carpool regulator) amanda says, "winners adjust." this saturday is our anniversary. one whole year! what's going on? where did this come from? life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.

i listen to feist and radiohead lately, and i watch a lot of intervention. i'm most fascinated by the interventionists. they're salespeople, slanging sobriety to addicts who are otherwise on their death beds. salespeople with a good product that everyone needs. i missed a few last night, but i'm hoping they'll pop up on "on-demand."

[gone to write tomorrow's objectives on the whiteboard.
5th grade: sing some songs. pretend to be cowboys. read some music.
3rd grade: jingle bell boogie. dance dance dance. forget you're learning.
8th grade: all i want for christmas is you. critique some cole porter. make some noise.
kindergarten: rudolph. are you really singing the right words? sounds close enough. now dance around some more.

time for a meeting. i'll try to be more regular. i'm so bad at being regular. come back and visit again soon.

peace.
