my heels clicked through the classrooms and hallways like miniature explosions this week at school. it's quiet as death there while the kids endure a marathon run of testing. music and all other specials are forgotten for the time being. instead, i'm in a 5th grade room, helping pass breakfast in the morning, then test books and pencils. i help unwrap countless kleenex boxes that their classroom teacher and i place strategically in front of the most important print work in the room so that when jose needs to double check "personification" and the poster is too far away, all he has to do is feign a runny nose. after the tests go out, then comes the long-lasting gum. one per desk.testing sucks. our once vibrant and noisy school is muted. what ever happened to exploding like fabulous yellow roman candles, like kerouac said? the kids are troopers. they will do well, but the benefits of good scores are bittersweet as i know they're the result of this week of glazed eyes and brains pushed to work against themselves. it's this silent wave that passes through, and everyone has to hold their breath. thank god spring break happens so soon. they deserve it.
patrick and keely came over last night. will and i made pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and asparagus for dinner, then we all played cranium. see if you can guess this cloodle.
